In recent years, gender studies have concentrated more and more on the transgression and questioning of the binary gender order. Inevitably, in most discussions of transgender, inter- and transsexuality, the body has proved to be a focal point.

This conference looks at the connection between gender, body, sexuality and identity from different angles and disciplines. Modifications of the body play an important role in transgender contexts, but this issue can be extended to other forms of surgical intervention (e.g. cosmetic surgery in general) and forms of violations of the body and their relevance in the construction of gender. Furthermore, flexibility and transgression have become prominent and debatable issues in the restructuring of gendered positions (e.g. masculinities, motherhood etc.)
